The Immigration Handbook: For Work, Investment, Study, and Retirement in the U.S.A.

November 26, 2008

The Immigration Handbook: For Work, Investment, Study, and Retirement in the U.S.A. The Immigration Handbook is a handy, affordable guide to to the U.S. immigration legal system. While similar books tend to regurgitate complex regulations, this handbook simplifies the subject in easy-to-read, accessible language, while providing a practical approach to immigration. It takes readers from entry to the U.S. as a businessperson, tourist or student through the immigration processing maze all the way to citizenship:

Five ways to obtain a green card
Details for applying for all visa categories
Appropriate strategies for the visa process
Practical hints/How to choose the proper visa category
An “insiders” look at how U.S. laws may change.
Easy-to-understand explanations of INS and Consular visa processing, immigrant and non immigrant visa processing, changes of status, extensions, citizenship and tax obligations.
Customer Review: Good overview
This book is a good overview of all USA visas available to the prospective immigrant. Doesn’t bog the reader down with too much detail, but it is good for a first look at how a person might be able to live and work in the USA. Also has some useful case studies to clarify certain points and allows reader to make a good comparison between routes into the US.
Customer Review: Good overview, but short on specifics for me
This is a good introduction to the topic of immigration to the United States, but it didn’t provide enough depth for me. I think this is a limitation of the subject matter, more than just this book. Immigration issues are so broad-ranging that it would be impossible to cover them all in a short book. Specifically I was looking for details on TN visas; they’re covered, but not enough for me. This would be a good book to use as a jumping-off point to find further information.

Retirement: Your Best Years Have Just Begun Customer Review: Not what I thought!
This is a small book (approx. 5 x 5) with a listing of inspirational sayings - about 10 words per page. I was looking for something more informative.

November 24, 2008

Double Your Retirement Income: Three Strategies for a Successful Retirment A comprehensive retirement savings guide As the government and corporations shift responsibility for retirement savings to the worker, employees at all economic levels must now save and invest for themselves. Financial professional Peter Mazonas gives readers of all ages underutilized but proven strategies to hatch and grow their retirement nest eggs, including using a hands-off index tracking investment strategy to double their retirement income; using adjustable rate mortgages and putting the savings into retirement accounts; saving for retirement and educating your children with other people’s money; buying and holding no-load, low-fee index tracking mutual funds and stocks; and more.
Customer Review: Investing made ‘easy’
Mazonas does an amazing job of relating the many complex trends in investment today into practical advice on how to factor these trends into your own planning. In many areas he even helps the average small investor find ways of leveraging their own contributions.

I recommend the book unreservedly, for anyone who wants to understand the bigger picture, whilst being advised on how it applies to their own circumstances.

Customer Review: What a chump I have been!
A must read for all of us underfunded baby boomers. There is something new for everyone. Mazonas lays bare an understanding of why we never got ahead investing I stocks and mutual funds. His reasoning and the math of why index tracking products are our salvation is to good to pass up.

What a chump I have been! I payed for my kids education out of pocket each year because I could. Mazonas’ explanation of how much better off I would be now if I had used student loans and while funding my pension plan is astounding.
