Retirement New Mexico: A Complete Guide to Retiring in New Mexico

October 19, 2008

Retirement New Mexico: A Complete Guide to Retiring in New Mexico Since its original publication in 1990 this handy paperback has been the standard reference for those interested in retiring in New Mexico. Now in its third edition?including the latest census data?it provides a detailed picture of 30 communities statewide. Climate, terrain and altitude; recreational, educational and cultural facilities?all these are addressed. Cost of living factors including housing costs and local tax rates are detailed. Health-care and senior-specific facilities are here with relevant phone numbers and email addresses.

As the number of Baby Boomers reaching a more active retirement age increases, many New Mexico communities are making new efforts to attract the younger generation considering a move to the Land of Enchantment. Thus, golf courses, museums, theaters and shopping opportunities are expanding in both the smaller and larger towns and cities, and they have been included in this indispensable book.

This 2002 edition is simply the best and most complete guide to retiring in New Mexico.
Customer Review: Bringing reality to a dream
Concise and well-organized. This is a good reference for comparing the salient points of different parts of New Mexico. We are currently trying to decide whether northwest or southwest New Mexico will suit us better. The illustrations are breathtaking and the descriptions include practical details on healthcare and other services.
Customer Review: Good for finding ‘out of the way’ spots in New Mexico
While the book devoted a bit more space to the retirement home/assisted care scene than I needed for each locale, it helped me find a number of interesting towns which had not been ‘on the radar’ with other sources. A good companion volume to a more generalized book on New Mexico.

My Life in Milwaukee Public Schools: Kindergarten to Retirement

October 16, 2008

My Life in Milwaukee Public Schools: Kindergarten to Retirement This is a book talking about the changes that have taken place in the Milwaukee Public Schools over a period of fifty years. It is seen from the eyes of a man who went from student to teacher, in the school system and worked year round at various other MPS jobs. As a student in the 1950′s and 1960′s, the high quality of the school system was evident. The changes started to be noticed in the 1970′s, as the authors teaching career was beginning. By the year 2004, the time of retirement, Milwaukee has become a failing school system mired in mediocrity. The story of a young boy who had the opportunity to go to school in a fine school system becomes a teacher in the system and sees the changes that take place first hand. The system that had been outstanding was being attacked on all sides for its failures. This all takes place in one lifetime – one career. How bad has it become? After reading these five decades of stories and events – you decide!
Customer Review: Insightful and intriguing
Personally, I don’t know of any book that would be as effective as this one in outlining what the author is trying to get across. Starting as a student in Kindergarten all the way through a multi-year teaching career in the same school system…how do you get a better viewpoint than that?

It’s a great read and I recommend it to anybody regardless of whether they’re involved in education or not.
Customer Review: An Engrossing Story
I found this book to be a compelling and engrossing non-fiction work. I loved how the author was able to bring me into his life and expose a system I never had any experience with. Even as the school system declines there is an overwhelming respect for the students and administration. Michael Wenzel’s approach and detailed analysis is thorough without getting lost in the minutia. His career and community service is an inspiration for us all.

I’m in Debt, Over 40, with No Retirement Savings. HELP!

October 16, 2008

I’m in Debt, Over 40, with No Retirement Savings. HELP! How would you like to be debt free? Do you wish you had some money set aside for retirement? Instead of just wishing about it, you can make it happen. At the age of 40, John White was in debt – credit cards, the worst kind of debt – and had no retirement savings. Today he has no credit card debt and a positive net worth.

Unlike most financial books, this one is based on real life experience, not just some financial advisor’s theories. All of the strategies are from the author’s real life experiences, and they are guaranteed to work – even if you’re not over 40.
Customer Review: Disappointing
I was disappointed that this book dealt very little with late retirement planning. It mostly concentrates on getting out of debt.
Customer Review: Feeling ripped off
After many sleepless nights worrying about how I will ever retire with my current debt structure and absolute lack of any savings, I began researching the subject.

The title caught my eye, as it’s my predicament too. I thought I would get some sage advice or at the very least a few tidbits to get me on the right track. Unfortantely, this book does not deliver. I already bought a new car. The old one cost over 7,000 a year to maintain. It was a Volvo. I have no access to a 401k.

The book is just worthless and a waste of my money. I see the only way out is to self-publish. At least I’ve done enough investigating to see what a person must do. I suppose I could now publish a worthwhile book explaining what we can do and more importantly, how.

If I could have given 0 stars, I would have.
