September 17, 2008

The Baby Boomer’s Retirement Cookbook: Or How To Eat Cheaper Than Dogfood Joy Jameson’s The Baby Boomers Retirement Cookbook, or How to Eat Cheaper than Dog Food is a terrific cookbook filled with recipes for inexpensive meals, with color photographs.
Customer Review: Full Tummy with Change left over
What a find! The recipes are delicious and easy to make. Really love Chicken Alfredo and Grandma’s Sick Soup. Definitely great for retirees.
Customer Review: “Young Boomer”
I agree with “Old Boomer” from Las Cruces NM, the book is terrific! It is clever and I love the pictures of the dog! The recipes turned out to be quick and delicious. I recommend this conversational piece book to all. Nevertheless, I too will be buying several more copies for my soon to be retiring baby boomer friends.

What Color Is Your Parachute? for Retirement: Planning Now for the Life You Want (What Color Is Your Parachute? for Retirement: Planning Now for the) For more than 35 years, WHAT COLOR IS YOUR PARACHUTE? has guided millions of job-hunters to find satisfying careers. Now, PARACHUTE FOR RETIREMENT will help them plan for the next stage of life. Going beyond financial planning, Richard N. Bolles and retirement expert John E. Nelson tackle readiness in terms of money, health, and happiness, using the latest research from economics, medicine, and psychology. PARACHUTE FOR RETIREMENT will inspire readers to take the helm of their retirement destinies, while fulfilling their lifelong goals, passions, and dreams.
Customer Review: Great read with great guidance and great referrals
This book is simply the best broad treatment of issues for the prospective retiree or already retired person that I am aware of. It covers all the bases and is presented in an easy-to-read style. It is meant to appeal to readers from a broad background and thus has content which is trivial in places (to me). But don’t make reviewer George Fulmore’s mistake of confusing the occasional trivial, repetitive, or (intentionally) internally contradictory words as meaningless or worthless: nothing could be further from the truth. Much of this reflects our society’s ignorance, uncertainty and ambivalence about the topics under consideration, especially those that are now dramatically changing due to increasing life spans.

I particularly like the author’s consistent inclusion of recommendations for further (and deeper) study and thought. I have uncovered a wealth of great material in following those leads.

Customer Review: Best bits about the book: how it all ties in together at the end
I was already a big fan of Richard Bolles’ What color is your parachute?, having completed it for the first time more than 20 years ago. And yes, it changed my life. Okay, so it took a while for me to actually find the job and then a little while longer for me to get a degree, but had I not taken the ‘journey’ I would not have even known I was meant to be a children’s librarian and storyteller extraordinaire.
So I was thrilled that as I enter a new crossroads in my life Richard Nelson chose to write this wonderful self-help book about retirement.
Best bits about this book: it would have to be that it all ties in together at the end – e.g. things I had identified in the Biological Practices recurred in the Geographical Place section. Needless to say the Financial Pillars chapter was a huge eye-opener for me. As a Mom who later divorced when my daughter went to university, I never dreamed I could one day be self-sufficient. And as it happens my #1 Way to Live is Self Sufficiency… the synergy continues.
I am sure it is one book I will revisit over and over again.
p.s. Thank goodness Nelson considers walking a good relaxation practice because I am absolutely useless at meditation, etc. Yoga teachers the world over breathe a sigh of relief when I quit their classes…

Should Immediate Annuities be a Tool in Your Retirement Planning Toolbox?

September 14, 2008

Should Immediate Annuities be a Tool in Your Retirement Planning Toolbox? I have been studying the subject of retirement planning the last few years. I wanted to explore if immediate annuities can play an important role in retirement planning. I have found that in some circumstances, immediate annuities can be an important retirement planning tool. I hope that my findings help people better understand immediate annuities and their use as a tool in their retirement planning toolbox.
