Customer Review: Retirement planning book review
If you purchase this book just know that it is a very basic book. It covers all the investment possibilities you should have been doing for the past 40 years. It would probably be better to read at age 20 than age 58 like I did.

America’s Best Low-Tax Retirement Towns: Where to Move To, and From, to Slash Your Taxes in Retirement!, Second Edition

July 24, 2008

America’s Best Low-Tax Retirement Towns: Where to Move To, and From, to Slash Your Taxes in Retirement!, Second Edition This book ranks and profiles 170 top retirement towns and major metropolitan areas according to tax burdens places on retirees. The authors identify the best tax heavens and the worst tax hells.
Customer Review: Very Helpful
There are two key words in the title to this book which to those considering retirement are a must: “Low-Tax”! If for some reason you missed that pitch maybe the second clue as to whom the book might appeal to is those on fixed incomes; ie. those who haved retired. Because we all know that taxes are an item over which we have little control, it behooves us to find a place we can stand to live that also might be a “tax heaven” instead of a “tax hell” to use terms supplied by the authors. I found that definitive term well applied by the authors but would not necessarily agree as to their choice of the best places to live in the states which have low tax rates. This book determines places with low taxes based on the things which the average joe pays taxes: personal and real property, income, purchases. Some web sites such as the one produced by the Tax Foundation of America base their ratings on “per capita income” of all taxes, including business taxes and thus don’t accurately reflect how individual tax rates might affect the retiree. This book avoids that trap. Now if you can afford to purchase a home in these “tax heavens” you are really set. Remember people who have retired have fixed incomes from pensions, social security, personal savings (IRA’s,etc.) and so on. They have to limit governement access to those funds. States with NO income tax certainly have to be a place to start.
Customer Review: disappointed
The authors, due to space considerations, do not include the nature and source of incomes used for their comparisons. Without this information, how can one determine if they fit the profile used.
Without knowing the amounts of various sources of incomes used,
I find the book of little use.

Gringos in Paradise: An American Couple Builds Their Retirement Dream House in a Seaside Village in Mexico

Gringos in Paradise: An American Couple Builds Their Retirement Dream House in a Seaside Village in Mexico Customer Review: I couldn’t have said it better myself!
Having just completed out first year living in a different small seaside town in Mexico, I can attest to the authenticity of Barry and Thia’s experiences and appreciate their outlook on living in Mexico. I found myself following my husband around, reading passages out loud to him, i.e., “You’ve got to hear this!” Golson does an especially good job of describing the naivete with which they (and we) began the experience and the incremental ways they learned to love a side of Mexico you can only experience as a resident.

The hopes and the frustrations involved in building a home here are accurately and humorously described. But for me, the real value of this book is the unpretentious way he describes the development of their deep affection for Mexico and Mexicans. My husband and I have reached the same conclusions, through a series of experiences that are very similar to theirs.

If you are considering a move to Mexico, this is an instructive read – not so much for the information about homebuilding (although it IS helpful and accurate) but more for the story of acclimation to a culture that is SO much more different than you could ever imagine.

Many authors have taken advantage of the growing trend to move south and we have read most of them. Along with Don Adam’s book (Head for Mexico), this is the one I would recommend.

Customer Review: One of the best of its genre
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Golson writes in a witty, down-to-earth style that engages the reader and leaves you wanting more. So many of the “American moves to paradise” authors come off as either arrogant or complaining know-it-alls. Barry Golson is neither, and his zest for participating in the very life of his adopted second home is refreshing. A great read.

Retirement Plan Benefits and QDROs in Divorce

July 21, 2008

Retirement Plan Benefits and QDROs in Divorce Every year, well over one million Americans obtain a divorce. Retirement savings represent one of, if not the most, significant assets of most individuals, with typically more than 75% of a couple’s assets comprised of retirement savings. The division of retirement benefits in a divorce is effected by a Qualified Domestic Relations Order (QDRO). Under a QDRO, a portion of an employee’s retirement benefits may be assigned to someone other than the plan participant to fulfill that individual’s marital property settlement or family support obligations. The accurate valuation and allocation of retirement benefits in divorce proceedings are thus critical aspects of the divorce process, and accountants who provide litigation support services, family law attorneys, benefits specialists advising individuals and other professionals involved in divorce proceedings need to under the methods and legal requirements. Unfortunately for practitioners, these topics are complex and are not comprehensively covered by undergraduate or graduate coursework. Neither the CPA examination nor coursework in undergraduate/graduate accounting programs cover the topics of valuing retirement benefits or QDROs, yet more and more CPAs are engaging in this work and are called into court to testify on these particular financial issues. Similarly, family law attorneys and even judges hearing marital dissolution cases often have little familiarity with QDRO requirements and their potential importance as a marital asset. This lack of understanding leads to poor drafting, exposing an attorney to potential malpractice liability, and missed opportunities to maximize a client’s ability to collect what is duly owed. CCH’s Retirement Plan Benefits and QDROs in Divorce provides detailed guidance on the issues attendant to examining and valuing retirement benefits in divorce and drafting QDROs and non-ERISA plan orders. Coverage includes discussions of: viewing retirement plans as assets; determining whether to use a valuation of a retirement plan to offset its value against other marital assets or to draft a QDRO; discovery; the procedure for valuing retirement plans, including the characteristics of pension valuations and other considerations in valuation such as vesting and pensions in payout status; effective drafting of QDROs for divorce and related orders, including the use of model orders; use of QDROs for child support arrearages; tax treatment of benefits; non-ERISA plans, including the civil service retirement system, military plans, and city and county plans; malpractice considerations; and more. Retirement Plan Benefits and QDROs in Divorce is a practical, easy-to-understand resource for this complex area of practice. It includes helpful case studies, examples, proposed settlement agreement language, and more. And, unlike other books currently available on the subject, this new title is the only title oriented to accountants as well as attorneys. All the key advisers to the divorce, whether drafting attorney, accounting/benefit valuation professional or other specialists should understand the issues, so they can effectively contribute to the settlement. In terms of placing a value on a retirement plan, a better educated practitioner can examine a pension valuation presented by an “expert” and not be intimidated by the methodology. Written by Timothy Voit, a full-time specialist engaged in retirement plan valuation and QDRO drafting, this book focuses on pensions because they tend to be the largest marital asset, in terms of value. The discussion is divided into two main parts–the valuation of retirement plans and the drafting of court orders dividing retirement plans using a QDRO or like court order, with the chapters placed in order based on their relevance to the divorce process in general.

The Last Resort: A Retirement Vision for Canadians and How to Achieve It

July 21, 2008

The Last Resort: A Retirement Vision for Canadians and How to Achieve It Customer Review: Great book for young people!
Before reading The Last Resort I neither understood nor cared much about retirement planning. Now, however, even though I’m only 24 years old, and thanks to the book, I’ve acquired a much better appreciation of why investing and lifestyles planning is so important – for both young and old. I’m recommending that any young person who reads this should also read The Last Resort.
Customer Review: A comprehensive investors guidebook.
I’ve read many books on investing and I haven’t found one yet that is better than The Last Resort. Readers learn not only about some little known investment strategies, but also about the importance of knowing what you want to do with your money once you have it – a different, more holistic approach that really appealed to me.

Customer Review: Lasser Let Me down
Lasser is a known name in the consumer ‘financial’ publishing business. This book about retirement planning is very outdated and even misleading in some areas. The calculations it asks the reader to do are with pencil and paper. As my daughter used to say “A,DUUh!” There are a myriad of easy PC based tools in the market that are far superior. I would have returned the book the next day if I bought it at a local book store.
Customer Review: Financial Realism in Retirement
This is what happens when a highly qualified person writes a book to help others understand their retirement finances so that they can realistically plan and feel as comfortable as is possible with their present and future financial well-being.
It is based on realistic historical and mathematical facts. The planning methodology is as good as it gets. I can’t say enough about how useful this book has been to me to say nothing of the confidence I now have in my personal finances. It’s not enough to say that Mr. Hebeler is to be congratulated!
